Texas recently enacted a policy that has sparked national attention and an overdue conversation. The state has banned citizens and entities from China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran from buying or leasing property within its borders. This includes single family homes, apartment complexes, industrial properties, and farmland.
This decision should not be viewed as extreme or controversial. It should be recognized as common sense. The United States has a responsibility to protect its land, its people, and its long term security. Allowing adversarial nations to gain permanent footholds inside our borders undermines all three.
China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran are not neutral actors on the world stage. Their governments openly work against American interests through espionage, cyber operations, economic pressure, and influence campaigns. These are facts that have been acknowledged by multiple administrations across party lines.
Allowing entities tied to those governments to own land in the United States creates unnecessary risk. Land ownership is not symbolic. It is permanent. It creates leverage and influence that cannot be easily undone.
There is a critical distinction between leasing property and owning it. Leasing is temporary and can be regulated, restricted, or revoked. Ownership is enduring and far more difficult to control once granted.
At the absolute most, foreign entities should only be permitted to lease property under strict oversight. Ownership of American land should be reserved for American citizens and American businesses. This is not discrimination. It is sovereignty.
Foreign ownership does not exist in a vacuum. It directly affects American families trying to buy homes.
Across the country, families save for years to purchase what they hope will be their forever home. Increasingly, they find themselves outbid by international buyers offering cash with no contingencies. These buyers often do not live in the community and may never even see the property in person.
The result is fewer opportunities for Americans and rising housing costs driven by foreign capital rather than local demand.
The same problem affects small business owners.
Local entrepreneurs looking to open cafes, shops, or service businesses often compete against foreign corporations that can outbid them with ease. These properties are sometimes acquired simply to park money rather than serve the community.
When small businesses lose access to affordable property, communities lose jobs, character, and economic resilience.
Perhaps the most concerning issue is farmland.
Farmland is not just real estate. It is food production, supply chain stability, and national independence. When foreign entities tied to adversarial nations acquire agricultural land, the consequences extend far beyond economics.
American farmers are being priced out of land they need to expand production, while foreign buyers gain control over resources that directly impact food security. This is a strategic vulnerability that should never have been allowed to develop.
Protecting American land is not about fear or hostility toward individuals. It is about responsibility. Every sovereign nation protects its land and critical resources. The United States should be no different.
Foreign adversaries should not be permitted to own homes, businesses, or farmland inside the United States. Doing so weakens national security and harms American citizens.
Texas has taken an important step by drawing a clear line. Now the question is whether other states and the federal government will follow.
Once land is sold, it is rarely recovered. Delaying action only increases the cost and the risk.
Citizens should contact their governors and state legislators and make their voices heard. American land should remain in American hands.
This issue is not going away. It is only becoming more urgent.
Do you believe foreign adversaries should be allowed to own land in the United States? Contact your governor and share this article with others in your state.
